Counted as one of the
popular refractive surgery, the Lasik laser surgical procedures are associated
with several disadvantages. One of the major disadvantages of Lasik laser
surgery is that it is associated with loss of vision due to infection. As per
the statistical analysis conducted by Archives of Ophthalmology in the year
2006, it was reported that the risk of vision is much higher in the patients
who wear contact lens than the loss of vision due to infection caused by the
Lasik laser surgical procedures. It was reported that the vision loss due to
infection caused during the laser surgical procedures are about 1 in 10, 000
cases where is much less than vision loss ratio of 1: 2000 in cases of contact
len wearers.
In some cases, the
Lasik laser surgical procedures are associated with vision problems known as
“Higher-Order Aberrations”. “Higher-Order Aberrations” cannot be treated by
simple eyeglasses and requires special testing for diagnosis purposes. It was
reported that the problems of “Higher-Order Aberrations” can occur when during
night the light enters the edge of the Lasik flap, due to dilation of eye
pupils. Besides this, Lasik and PRK are associated with spherical aberration in
some cases.
Although temporary, in
some cases the patients after the Lasik often experiences dry eyes following
surgery. Dry eye can develop into dry eye syndrome if left untreated by
ophthalmologists. The doctors can make
use of artificial tears for the purpose of treatment of dry eyes associated
with Lasik. Besides this, prescription tears and punctal occlusion can be used
for the purpose of treatment of dry eyes.
In some cases, the
patients often complain of permanent dry eye syndrome. Halos and starbursts can
be seen by some patients post Lasik surgery, around bright light at night.
Preoperative, intraoperative, early postoperative or late postoperative sources
can often causes different types of complications LASIK laser surgical
procedures. Besides this, it is reported that 0.244% cases of flap
complications can occur during Lasik surgery.
Lamellar corneal Lasik surgeries
are often associated with flap complications like displaced flaps. Slipped flap and Flap interface particles,
are some of the other complications that can occur during Lasik surgery.
Diffuse lamellar keratitis can also be associated with Lasik laser surgical
