Symptoms of cataract and cataract removal surgery

Cataract is the clouding of the eye lens, which prevents the passage of light and blocks the vision. Though, cataract is related to old age, it can also happen due to injury, disease or inflammation of the eye.  Cataract can lead to blindness that is why the surgery must be done to prevent the further deterioration in the lens of the eye. Surgery is the only mean to treat cataract. The common symptoms of the cataract are:  cloudy vision, interference with daily activities like reading or watching TV, sensitive to light, especially to headlight, sunlight, halo or haze around lights. The increase in cataract condition can also decrease the ability to distinguish between colors. The double or multiple visions also starts in the initial stages of the cataract. This problem comes to an end with the growth of cataract. The patient suffering from cataract also may change frequently, the number of spectacles or eye glasses. Some persons with cataract also may get improved near vision with onset of cataract but this is temporarily and vision gets worse with growth in cataract.

Cataract surgery is done to remove the cloudy lens and put clear artificial lens in its place. The advanced cataract surgery is called phacoemulsification, or phaco. In this surgery, the cloudy lens is disintegrated into small pieces with the help of an ultrasonic probe. After gently washing out the debris, the new artificial lens is put in its place.  The incision of only 2.6millimeter is required in this surgery. This incision is self healing. The stitches are not required in this surgery.

Before the surgery, the local anesthesia is given. This reduces the sensation of pain and also prevents Cataract surgery in Delhi the movements of the eye during surgery. Eye drops as anesthesia are placed on the eye. This prevents the pain sensation but does not prevent the movements of the eye. But under both anesthesia, the person is awake and in full awareness during operation.

The artificial lens, which are inserted into the place of cataract lens are of two types. The folded lens and non- folded lens .The non folded one are made with hard plastic and large incision has to be made to insert them. Folded one are made from soft acrylic plastic. The incision for inserting them into eye has to be very small. They do not require any stitches and healing time with them is only 4-5 days. The chance of any infection is also to zero.

Again the folded lens can be monofocal or multifocal. The monofocal lenses give enhanced vision but for near vision the patient has to wear glasses. This monofocal provides improved vision only for one distance. It cannot change like the original lens. Only the use of multifocal gives Lasik laser in Delhi independence from glasses.  The multifocal lens has improved vision for at both distance and near points.  More than 80 % patients will never need any glasses for any activity. The remaining 20 % also prefer multifocal for both near and distance visions.

Cataract Surgeries Performed In India

Cataract is the condition in which cloudy lens of the eye affects the vision of the person. This cloudy of the eye lens can be due to old age or because of some injuries to the eye. Surgery is the only mean to remove the cataract lens to help a person to get the normal vision. In the cataract surgery, the affected lens is removed and replaced by plastic lens.

In extracapsular surgery method   a medium sized slit is made on the side of the cornea to remove the cloudy lens of the eye. After this removal the surgeon vacuums the rest of the lens. This surgery is often done when the degree of the affected lens is more than normal. In phacoemulfication, the small incision is made to vacuum out remove the harder part of the lens after it is liquefied. The surgeon uses anesthesia to do the phacoemulfication. The small opening is made at the side of the cornea. Then, a device is send into the eye to disintegrate the lens into small pieces with ultrasound vibrations .These fragments are then sucked out of the small incision made at the side of the cornea. In intracapsular surgery, the whole lens is removed in one piece. This required making quite a big cut to remove the lens. These days, this type of surgery is used only in case of trauma and dislocation of lens.

The lens which replaces the natural lens of the eye is made of plastic. The selection of a particular lens depends on the size of the patient eye .This lens is called intraocular lens or intraocular implant, IOL. These lenses focus light onto retina to help patient to see correctly. These lenses are permanent and don’t need replacement can last the life of the patient.

The surgeries can be Cataract surgery in Delhi performed in form of outpatient procedure and patients do not have to stay in hospital.  Some persons like to stay awake during the process of surgery. But local anesthesia is always given. Some sedative is also given with numb drops put in the eye under operation.   Both the eye is not given cataract surgery at the same time. If both eyes need surgery, then difference between the two surgeries will be 4 to 8 weeks.

Some mild pain or itching is normal after surgery. Sensitive to light and some discharge from eye is other Lasik laser in Delhi normal conditions after the surgery. Surgeon recommends some pain killers and drops to aid the healing process, prevent infection and pressure inside the eye.  Some strenuous exercises are to be avoided immediately after surgery. The person should also use reading glass immediately after surgery.

But before any surgery, the consultations with eye specialist are very important. The condition of the eye, general health condition of the patient is taken into consideration before deciding the surgery method to remove the cataract.

Types of Surgeries Performed to Remove Cataract

Cataract is the cloudiness of the lens of the eye. This is due to aging process or due to some physical injury to the eye.  During the cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and is replaced by clear lens, which is a manmade lens.

There are three types of surgerical techniques, by which the cataract is removed. In the extracapsular type, which is also most common technique used in the treatment, the surgeon makes a slit at the side of the cornea and removes the cloudy section of the eye lens.   The rest of the lens is vacuumed. This type of procedure is used in case of advanced cataract.

In Phacoemulsification ,small incision is made in the side of the cornea and then an ultraviolent vibration are send to the eye to break the cloudy lens into small parts. Then these small parts are sucked out by making a small incision in the eye. In the older type of cataract surgery, the lens is taken out in one piece. Though, this surgery is rarely used today, but may be required in cases of trauma or dislocation of lens.

The lens which is put in the place of old cloudy lens is called intraocular lens. This lens comes with an optical power selected by the surgeon to give normal vision. This lens does not require any special care. The function of this lens is to focus light onto the retina and improve the vision. Cataract surgery does not require a patient to stay in the hospital and can be done in one hour.  Patient is under some kind of sedative and numb drops are given to the eyes before the start of the surgery. If both eye need cataract surgery, the only one eye is treat at the time and next eye is treated after 4 – 8 weeks. The result of one eye will determine the next surgery in other eye.

The use of laser is bit expenses Cataract surgery in Delhi compare to other methods of the cataract surgery. The laser use improves accuracy but has no major impact on the result of the cataract surgery. It also does not reduce the recovery time.

Cataract surgery is considered very safe and the rate of success is more than 98 %. After the surgery, there may be some irritation in the eye and doctor may prescribe some medicine as pain reliever.  Some sensitivity to light Lasik laser in Delhi  and tearing in the eye may also occur, but all these are short term issues, which will go after few days. Doctors also recommend wearing dark glasses for few days. After the surgery, patient may need new prescription of eye glass. The use of reading glass after cataract surgery is needed. The consultation with eye surgeon must decide the type of treatment and other precaution during and after the cataract surgery.
